Frequently asked.

Why doesn't more help?

Once tissue stores are saturated (around 200 mg/d), additional oral vitamin C is excreted in urine. The plasma ceiling is hard. The skin does receive some vitamin C from oral intake, but the gradient from gut to skin is unfavourable, and topical application delivers vastly higher cutaneous concentrations.

Should I megadose during a cold?

The literature on megadosing for cold prevention is mixed at best (the Linus Pauling hypothesis has not aged well in trials). Modest doses around the time of viral illness may shorten duration slightly; multi-gram doses produce mostly osmotic diarrhoea and expensive urine.

Will it pair with my topical?

Yes, with no interaction concern, but the additive effect is small. The topical does the heavy lifting; the oral supports baseline collagen synthesis.

Am I likely deficient?

Rarely in adults eating fruit and vegetables regularly. True deficiency (scurvy) requires sustained dietary inadequacy — historically a sailor's disease, occasionally seen in restrictive eaters or with severe malabsorption. The supplement aisle has medicalised normal nutritional sufficiency.
