P. 17 · BRIEF

Panthenol.

The quiet supporting cast in nearly every barrier cream.

The pro-vitamin B5 form: water-soluble, well-tolerated, and converted in the skin to pantothenic acid — a cofactor in the synthesis of coenzyme A and downstream lipid metabolism. Modest, replicable, almost-never-failing. The ingredient that quietly improves the formula it lives in.

— § 01

What panthenol actually is.

Panthenol is the alcohol pro-form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). On contact with skin tissue it is enzymatically converted to pantothenic acid, which is a cofactor in coenzyme A synthesis — a central node in fatty-acid metabolism, ceramide assembly, and inflammatory signalling. The cosmetic effect is dual: humectant on the surface, metabolic support inside the keratinocyte.

— § 02

Mechanism, plainly.

Surface humectancy

Hygroscopic; binds water at the corneocyte surface and improves skin feel immediately.

Metabolic support

Pantothenic acid is rate-limiting for CoA synthesis; downstream effects on lipid assembly and barrier repair.

Anti-inflammatory

Modest effect on erythema and itch; replicated in mild eczema and post-procedure cohorts.

Frequently asked.

Is panthenol the same as vitamin B5?

It is the alcohol pro-form. Once on skin it is converted to pantothenic acid (true B5). The two terms are used interchangeably in cosmetic copy.

Will it heal an active wound?

It supports healing — reproducibly — but for an open wound, talk to a clinician. Bepanthen is the regulated wound product; Bepanthol-class cosmetics are for intact skin.

Does it actually do anything, or is it filler?

It is functional, not filler. The role is supporting. Panthenol does not transform skin on its own; it makes every formula it sits in measurably more comfortable and recovery-friendly.

Pregnancy-safe?

Yes. One of the few actives that is uncontroversially safe across pregnancy and lactation.
